Young mother stabbed to death in the middle of the day

A MAN has been arrested after a young mother was stabbed to death in broad daylight in the middle of a town centre.

Kerry Smith, who was in her 20s, died after being brutally knifed multiple times in the middle of Rowley Regis high street, West Midlands, on Sunday morning.

The mother-of-two sustained stab wounds after being attacked outside the Malt Shovel pub. She was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

Police investigating her death arrested a 39-year-old man overnight on suspicion of murder.

According to locals an argument broke out outside the pub between the woman and a man.

An area of the street outside the pub was cordoned off on Monday morning while forensic enquiries continued.

A worker at a nearby drugstore said it is usually a quiet area with no trouble.

“I am shocked that it happened at that time of day. You would expect it more at closing time if people are drunk but you would not expect someone to be drunk at that time. It is very odd,” she said.

One man, who did not want to be named, said:”It happened just before lunch time. I was in the pub but I didn’t hear anything. It was a girl arguing with a man.”

It is believed Kerry had two young children, one a baby.

A worker at a cafe near the scene said:”She was one of our customers. She was in and out perhaps once or twice a week. It is very sad.”

Police are appealing for information into the incident.

Yesterday tributes flooded into to a tribute page set up on social networking site Facebook.

Sarah Compton, wrote on the tribute page: “Kerry Smith you were such a star. I can’t believe you have been taken away at such a young age and in such an awful way. I have so many memories of you which will be cherished forever. Love You xx Rest in Peace xx”

Emma Martini Muddadem Crowley, said: “rip kerry ur light will be shining on ur little girl my thoughts go out to ur little girl and family xx

While another friend Jayne Harper wrote: “rest in peace kerry thoughts are wiv ur family and ur precoius little girl .. sleep tight sweet xx”
