A Wigan man has been left fighting for his life after he was stabbed for refusing to hand over his Mercedes keys to attackers.

The 59-year-old victim was confronted on his doorstep on Sunday morning shortly before 10am by two men and was stabbed multiple times during the altercation.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the attack, which took place on Worcester Avenue in Hindley and Detective Inspector Graham Atherton of Wigan CID called the stabbing “horrendous”.

“I am sure local residents will be shocked and angered by what has happened, but I want to try to reassure them that we have a team of experienced detectives working on the investigation and determined to find the men responsible,” he said.

The attackers have been described as white, with one man wearing a pale red top and the other dressed in a blue top with striped sleeves.

Following the attack, the pair fled down Worcester Avenue without the car keys and police are appealing for witnesses in the area at the time.
