Oompa Loompa abuses Pakistanis

A DRUNKEN ‘Oompa Loompa’ racially abused two Asian teenagers in front of families and children while out with his friend who was dressed as a Golliwog.

Robert Nottage, 21, pleaded guilty to abusing the teens while on a daytime drinking session in Northampton town centre on August 28, while dressed as the Charlie and The Chocolate Family character.

Northampton Magistrates’ Court heard on Tuesday Nottage was part of a group of friends also in fancy dress, including one who was dressed as a Golliwog.

Prosecuting, Julie Costello said Nottage, from Rugby, was on an annual Bank Holiday drinking session in Northampton when he began hurling racial abuse in Abington Street, at 5.10pm, while children and families were around.

The court heard Nottage began hurling a torrent of racial abuse at two Pakistani teens, challenging them to fight him, and also shouting EDL (English Defence League) slogans.

Nottage claimed he made the remarks after someone threatened the friend dressed as a Golliwog.

He had earlier pleaded guilty to making racial threats.

Nottage, from Rugby, Warks, was given a community order and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work after he admitted racially abusing the teens.

Presiding magistrate, Rosemary Read, said: “Mr Nottage, this was a bit silly wasn’t it? I think you realise that.

“I think in some ways it was out of character, you have a lot going for you in your life. You live with your parents, you have a job, a car, a girlfriend, you have an awful lot going for you. I hope you are going to put this behind you.”

She sentenced Nottage to an 18-month community order with a supervision requirement for 18 months and was ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

He was also told to pay court costs of GBP220.

In the hit book and film Oompa-Loompas are known for their short stature, green hair, orange skin and white pants with protruding knees.

In the book, Oompa-Loompa are the only people Willy Wonka will allow to work in his factory, because of the risk of industrial espionage committed by his candy-making rivals
