Crazed knifeman in Morrisons

THIS is the astonishing moment a crazed attacker stormed into a supermarket armed with an arsenal of knives including a hockey stick with a blade on the end as oblivious punters carried on their shopping.

Described as looking like a ‘warrior’, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard on Monday how David Millington, 37, went into Morrisons in a suburb of Wolverhampton last March wearing a tool belt containing five kitchen knives and a makeshift shield.

Millington then chased security guard Andrew Osbourne, who he lived close to as a youngster and reportedly has a 30-year grudge against, through the store before being tackled to the ground by brave manager Michael Walsh.

The shocking CCTV images show Millington, who is dressed in dark clothes with a black beanie hat, wielding the knives as he walks into the store and then bursting through the self-service checkouts, just inches away from other customers.

After chasing Mr Osbourne towards the pharmacy, the attacker collided with a female customer near a till before he was stopped in his tracks by Mr Walsh.

The brave store manager suffered a ten inch gash to his thigh and a cut to his hand and, along with a member of the public, Rodney Bruce, who assisted in detaining Millington, was awarded GBP250 from public funds for his bravery at the original court hearing in November.

After looking at CCTV images of the drama, jurors took just ten minutes to find that Millington was responsible for injuring Mr Walsh and the attacker was convicted of affray and possession of offensive weapons.

In November, Judge Dudley ruled that Millington was unfit to stand trial following reports from two psychiatrists and on Monday the court heard how a psychiatrist had concluded that the attacker was showing signs of schizophrenia.

Sentencing Millington to a hospital order under the mental health act, Judge Dudley said: “I’m satisfied on the evidence before me that you are suffering from a mental illness. You should be treated in a hospital setting.”
