“MAN FLU may be more than just a myth as new findings from ChemistDirect.co.uk, the UK’s number one online pharmacy, reveal thatmen spend an average of 19% more on cold and flu remedies than women.

The study analysed tens of thousands of sales transactions of cold and flu products on ChemistDirect.co.uk from August 2014 to May 2015 which reveals the average individual spend for men on remedies was £5.14 compared to just £4.31 for women.

Both men and women are prepared to fight back using remedies in liquid form, with products containing codeine and paracetamol being favoured over supplements.  Regional differences were also revealed, with the study finding Southerners spent 7% more on average than Northerners on cold and flu remedies.  This supports recent data which shows Southerners had 14% more cold and flu cases last month than their Northern counterparts.

Chris Pick, a Consultant Naturopath at ChemistDirect.co.uk commented: “Recent research has shown that men’s lack of female sex hormones leaves them with a weaker immune system, which might explain why our data points to the much-debated man flu myth being real. Whatever your gender, and whether you have a simple cold or full blown flu, we have over 100 remedies to help you get back on your feet quickly.”

The most popular cold and flu product on ChemistDirect.co.uk in winter 2014 was Care + Gee’s Linctus BP. Others that made the top 10 included, Night Nurse Capsules and Sudafed Blocked Nose Spray.
