Welch the Florist, a fifth-generation family business based in Nottingham, has been recognised with a ‘Highly Commended’ award in the customer excellence category at the 2024 Midlands Family Business Awards, held at Athena in Leicester.
The Midlands Family Business Awards, celebrating their 12th year, honour the success of family businesses across the UK. The event, held on 3rd October, raised funds for the Brain Tumour Charity.
Welch the Florist, established in Long Eaton in 1920, is one of Nottingham’s oldest businesses and has maintained its family-centred values for over a century. In 1973, Tony Shaw became a director and introduced his passion for flowers and horticulture to the business, creating elegant and thoughtfully designed floral bouquets.
Tony’s son Gareth now leads the company, having integrated six former florists under the Welch name. Welch is now Nottinghamshire’s top flower delivery service, with customers served through Welch and Interflora.
Gareth expressed his gratitude for the recognition, saying: “This is the first time in our 104-year history that we’ve entered an award. Being shortlisted as a finalist came as a complete surprise, and to be highly commended among so many fantastic businesses is truly flattering.”
Charlotte Perkins, Group Managing Director at Wilsons, organisers of the awards, commented: “The judges faced a difficult task in selecting the winners. With so many remarkable entries, the discussions about the Winners and Highly Commended were intense. Every business that reached the finals should feel very proud of their accomplishments.”
Gareth continued, “Being highly commended recognises the whole team’s dedication to excellence and is a testament to the hard work, passion, and expertise offered by the Welch the Florist team.”
