Cygnet Health Care Achieves ‘Good’ CQC Rating

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has rated Cygnet Hospital Derby ‘Good’ across all categories, praising the kindness and compassion of staff towards service-users.

Operated by Cygnet Health Care, Cygnet Hospital Derby is a mental health hospital located on London Road, Derby. The hospital provides mental health rehabilitation for men, in addition to a specialist female personality disorder service that has been recognised as one of the leading services of its type in the West and East Midlands region.

Cygnet Health Care CEO Dr Tony Romero said he was delighted that staff at Cygnet Hospital Derby had been recognised for delivering respectful and safe care, achieving a ‘Good’ rating in all areas. He went on to publicly thank his team for their commitment throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, explaining that their dedication and resilience had kept service users safe and expressing his pride at their achievement.

In the CQC report,  inspectors concluded that Cygnet Hospital Derby provided safe, caring, effective, well-led and responsive services following inspection visits in May 2022. Cygnet Hospital Derby’s Hospital Manager, Mark Varney, said he was proud of hospital staff for their achievement, adding that after a lot of hard work and dedication he was especially grateful for positive feedback. He also expressed his gratitude to all service-users and staff who provided input.

CQC particularly praised staff at Cygnet Hospital Derby for the high level of care they provided to service-users. The report revealed that staff treated patients with kindness and compassion, respecting patients’ dignity and privacy, understanding their individual needs, and supporting them to understand their treatment, care or condition. In addition, the CQC report praised staff for their discreet, respectful and responsive care of patients, acknowledging that staff provided help, advice and emotional support when patients needed it.

During their visits to Cygnet Hospital Derby, CQC inspectors spoke to service-users, relatives and carers. The report outlined positive feedback from patients, indicating that they felt supported by staff who were understanding, kind and polite, making time for them, listening to them and helping them to feel safe.

The report also highlighted opportunities provided to service-users to develop new skills, try new experiences and gain independence. In particular, it mentioned patients had praised activities made available to them like karaoke, bowling, going for walks and visits from a music therapist, as well as specialist treatments like art therapy and occupational therapy.
