Following Donald Trump’s triumphant return in the 2024 presidential election, new research reveals that millions of Americans are considering their “great escape.”

The Immigration Advice Service reports that 25% of Americans are contemplating a move overseas, with a 500% increase in U.S. traffic to its website. Google searches for “moving abroad” and “how to emigrate” have also reached record levels this year.

Interest in emigration is concentrated in major coastal cities. Nearly half (47%) of Los Angeles residents and 35% of New Yorkers are contemplating relocation. Younger generations lead this trend, with 40% of 16-24 year olds considering emigration, compared to 14% of over-55s.

Canada tops the list of preferred destinations (29%), followed by the UK (19%), with less interest in Ireland (7.5%) and Australia (8%).

The trend is mirrored in Britain, where 40% of citizens are now less likely to consider moving to the U.S. Women are particularly inclined to avoid America (50%), favouring destinations like Australia (15%) and Canada (14%).

Ono Okeregha, Director at the Immigration Advice Service, stated: “There’s a complex mix of factors that affect a person’s choice to emigrate and their preferred destination.
