ANCIENT CAVES MAY WRECK SUPERMARKET PLANS

Experts have warned that plans to build a supermarket with an underground car park may not be possible – because there might be ancient caves.

The local council have approved plans to build a new supermarket with basement parking but experts say there could be caves beneath the proposed site and potentially more.

Initial site investigations show that “caves are not under the proposed development”, according to the council who are also planning to build a block of 23 flats.

But Peter Burgess said the planned site is between two caves he is aware of, but insisted it’s impossible to tell whether there are caves under the site in Reigate, Surrey.

Peter, Mines Agent for the Wealden Cave and Mine Society, said: “The area is away from anything we are away of but it’s between two that we are aware of.

“So who knows what’s in between them? It’s impossible. It’s one of those things that they we’ll only know once they start.

“We would be interested to know if there is anything, obviously.”
